ENZO VISSER

ABOUT

Enzo Visser (b. 1998) is a photographer born in Ede, Gelderland, whose practice deals with topics like identity, belonging, absence and self-portraiture. Inspired by the Dutch greats of photography and film, he explores the idea of male vulnerability through the lens of absence; what can we photograph that we have yet to experience? How do our experiences, or sometimes lack thereof, shape us?

Variables
With Variables, I use self-portraiture to perform different roles, types, ideas and understandings of what a man looks like, is like and should be like. Through these images, I am to demystify my findings and make these men real, tangible and sensitive.

Series of 20 self-portraits.

Mezelf Door Jouw Ogen Zien
For the “Levenslijnen” exhibition, hosted by Pride Photo in collaboration with Breda Photo, I was asked to photograph Joan. At the heart of the project was a moment of hesitation: a portrait the artist felt unsure to show, depicting Joan with his eyes closed and mouth slightly open, an image that felt vulnerable and unfamiliar. Joan’s response, “Beauty for people is beauty, beauty for a photographer is sometimes also light,” reframed the encounter and the meaning of the image. The project approached seeing and being seen as a form of reciprocity.
